Family-owned manufacturing company sees large capacity 5-axis machining as critical to survival in a highly competitive manufacturing environment

CINCINNATI, OH (April 18, 2002) - Cincinnati Machine announced today that it received an order in excess of $1 million from Brown Precision, Inc., Huntsville, AL for a Cincinnati H5-1000, 5-Axis Horizontal Machining Center to machine large and complex aerospace components. The H5 will deliver unique machining capabilities to this first time 5-axis customer and position Brown Precision, Inc. to win more contracts in higher value subcontract work.

After meeting with several machine tool manufacturers to understand the full scope of stepping up to 5-axis machining, Brown Precision, Inc. chose Cincinnati as their manufacturing partner. A leader in aerospace manufacturing in both metal cutting and composites, Cincinnati can offer customers the best overall solution to complex manufacturing challenges.

"Brown Precision, Inc. has more than three decades of experience in precision machining and the addition of the H5 will provide unique 5-axis capacity for projects involving large aluminum monolithic structures," said Chip Storie, Cincinnati Machine vice president of marketing. "Brown will have access to the entire Cincinnati team of experts to insure maximum productivity is achieved with their new equipment."

The H5's versatile tilting spindle provides flexible contour cutting with 180° A-axis sweep. This, in combination with X, Y, Z and B axes of contouring motion, allows for both 5-axis and 5-sided machining. Brown Precision, Inc. selected their H5 with the optional 1250 mm by 1000 mm pallets to further enhance setup flexibility. These capabilities will allow BPI to complete more accurate parts with fewer setups while maximizing spindle utilization. The initial application for the machine will be producing highly contoured aircraft windshield components and tooling for PPG Aircraft Products, also in Huntsville, AL.

The machine will be installed in the 36,000 sq. ft. first phase of Brown's new 100,000 sq. ft. facility under construction in the Chase Industrial Park in Huntsville. Project completion is scheduled for this fall.

"We have always tried to look ahead and differentiate ourselves with superior capabilities and quality," said Dan Brown, Brown Precision, Inc.'s president. "This new Cincinnati H5 can open doors to new opportunities with many major producers of aircraft and aerospace structural components. With the addition of this new machine, we'll be ready".
